The Great Wildebeest Migration in Kenya
The Great Wildebeest Migration is one of nature’s most spectacular wildlife events and one of the Seven New Wonders of the Natural World. Every year, more than 1.5 million wildebeests, accompanied by hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelles, migrate between the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania and the Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya in search of fresh grazing.
The migration reaches Kenya between July and October, when enormous herds gather along the banks of the Mara River, preparing for dramatic river crossings while avoiding giant Nile crocodiles waiting beneath the water. Lions, cheetahs, leopards, hyenas, and other predators closely follow the migration, creating extraordinary wildlife viewing opportunities.
The annual cycle begins with the calving season in the southern Serengeti between January and March, before the herds gradually move northward. After spending several months in the Masai Mara, they return to Tanzania around December and January, completing one of the world’s greatest wildlife journeys.
